The Montessori Method
The Montessori method was founded by an Italian educator, physician, and scientist named Maria Montessori. Drawing on her previous experience working with children and utilizing scientific observation, Dr. Montessori created educational materials and structured a classroom setting that encouraged children’s inherent eagerness to learn (American Montessori Society, 2023). Montessori involves an independent and self-directed learning approach which guides an individual to view taking ownership of their learning, choices, and actions as a privilege, not a chore. “Contrary to the goal of most educational settings, which is to have its students reach maximum achievement in certain academic subjects, the Montessori method creates an environment that promotes a child’s optimal intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development to occur” (Ruhl, 2023).
In Order To Have Freedom, One Must Be Responsible.
Responsibility is not just admitting to mistakes, it is about intentional, ethical choices that consider the well-being of oneself, others, and the world. Accepting and fulfilling responsibilities empowers individuals to take charge of their lives, enabling them to make thoughtful choices and develop the discipline necessary for personal freedom. Not only does responsibility play a crucial factor for personal freedom, but it has a lot to do with how respectful relationships thrive.
It takes courage to admit our faults and seek solutions, which is a trait that embodies strength.
By recognizing the significance of responsibility, it has allowed me to approach friendships with a keen awareness, identifying those who value accountability and mutual growth. However, one can only do so much and there will be times where perspectives differ. Even in the face of these differing perspectives, there is still an opportunity for me, as an individual, to do the best I can to embrace the diversity of viewpoints while maintaining respect and empathy.
